Super Mario Bros. is celebrating 40 years with games, books and more

Nintendo revealed during the recent Nintendo Direct that Super Mario Bros. is celebrating 40 years and they are doing so with new games and more. The kick off happens next month when Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 is released and will run for at least until April. Here is everything that is coming.
Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2
Platforms: Nintendo Switch* | Date: October 2nd
Both titles feature improved UI, the option to play with button and stick or motion controls, an in-game music player, new Storybook content and enhanced resolution.
More details can be found here.
*The game will offer a Nintendo Switch 2 update to allow for 4K resolution.
Mario Tennis Fever
Platforms: Nintendo Switch 2 | Date: February 12
Pair topspins, slices, lobs and other familiar shots with new slide moves and defence-focused footwork. There are multiple modes to enjoy including Tournament, Trial Towers, Mix It Up mode (with Wonder effects), and Adventure mode, where Mario and friends are transformed into babies and must defeat monsters to return to normal.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book
Platforms: Nintendo Switch 2 | Date: Autumn 2026
One day, on the island where Yoshi and his friends live, a peculiar talking book named Mr. E suddenly falls from the sky. This mysterious book’s pages contain information about unusual creatures, so Yoshi decides to jump in and help investigate.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park
Platforms: Nintendo Switch 2 | Date: Autumn 2026
Enjoy a variety of attractions in the Bellabel Park plaza that lets you team up with (or work against) friends and family. Collect the most coins, run and hide in Phanto Tag, work together to pass a Bob-omb to the goal and more. This Nintendo Switch 2 Edition adds even more content and enhancements as well
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Platforms: Movie | Date: April 2nd
The follow up movie to the 2023 release will see the return of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, Kevin Michael Richardson and Jack Black.
Rosalina’s Storybook
Platforms: Book | Date: November 25
Featuring the actual art and story from Super Mario Galaxy, this book will be treasured by fans whether they’ve spent many hours with the game or are brand new to the world of Rosalina and the Lumas.
The book is up for pre-order now via Amazon US, local retailers should start to list it this week.
Talking Flower
Platforms: Shelf? | Date: Autumn 2026
The most annoying part of Super Mario Bros. Wonder was the Flower (thankfully you can disable the voice), but now Nintendo are making this a real product. The flower can speak when you press the button or randomly (if enabled), but it will not respond to you in anyway.
Super Mario Galaxy amiibo
Platforms: Shelf | Date: April 2nd
While Galaxy themed, the Super Mario Galaxy amiibo won’t arrive next month with the collection, but rather will arrive the same day as the new movie. The Mario amiibo when scanned into the Galaxy games will give you a life mushroom and the Rosalina amiibo will give you a 1-up mushroom, that is red and green respectively.
That is all that Nintendo have said about the 40th anniversary so far, well that those outside of Japan can enjoy. They are doing special themed tickets for the Nintendo Museum and sponsoring the Kyoto marathon, but unless you travel to Japan, you can’t get those.
Given that the 35th anniversary dropped some extra details a few months later, I imagine that this might as well, but only time will tell.
