A 20 year legacy is going away as Bluepoint Games are being closed by PlayStation

In a surprising move, PlayStation have announced that they are closing Bluepoint Games, a studio that they only acquired back in 2021 after the studio released the remake of Demon Souls, alongside the PlayStation 5 console.

Before Sony bought the studio, they had done a number of remasters and collection works for them including Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and God of War Collection, to name a few. They also worked with other companies like Respawn Entertainment to bring Titanfall to Xbox 360 and Konami for the Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection.

The reason why they are being shutdown is officially due to business review and a statement obtained by Bloomberg simply states the following:

Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftmanship.
— PlayStation Spokesperson

The more likely reason is due to the studios new game not coming together. Though in fairness to the folks working there, they were rumoured to be creating a God of War live-service game and that was cancelled in January 2025.

Honestly, the stones on PlayStation to shutter a studio, after they had them working on a live-service game. Bluepoint Games were not autonomous like Bungie is, they are required to work on whatever projects they are either given, or if they can make a case for, approved by PlayStation.

In the past few years, PlayStation had at one point four live-service games in development, the first to release was Concord and we all know how that went. The second of their live-service games was Marathon, and though it had a lot of silence and delays, it at least has a release date, time will tell if players like this new take on a beloved IP. The third game was announced years ago and since then has been completely MIA since it was first announced, with Fairgame$ not having anything to show after 4.5 years.

The reason why this stinks and to be fair all studio closures stink, but the main reason this stinks is that Bluepoint Games had 20 years of releases behind them and when they were forced/requested to work on a live-service game, that was cancelled by PlayStation, but Haven Interactive is still open boggles the mind. Now this is not me demanding that Haven Interactive be closed instead, but when you consider that the studio was spun up almost 5 years ago and has been working on a live-service game, shown nothing since its CGI reveal trailer and even seen its founder left. When they are allowed to keep working as if all is well, but the studio with an insane collection of releases behind them is shuttered, that just comes off as pathetic.

I honestly hope someone else sees the insane talent that is at Bluepoint Games and snaps them up, though not Microsoft as they don’t need another reason to close other studios.

For all those impacted, our thoughts are with them and we hope they land on their feet. For those leaders at PlayStation who are yet again punishing staff for their own bad decisions, we can only hope they leave and let people who understand and care about the industry lead the way.
