What are Warner Bros working on... A look at their studios

There is no way to sugar coat it, 2025 was a bad year for Warner Bros Games and that is just in terms of games released last year, which there were two games and they were both mobile games.

Of course, the biggest issue last year was the utter demolition of their studios, with three of them shuttered at once. Player First Games was only bought by them in 2024 and while they had to restart on Multiversus, there was seemingly some love for it, but nope they were shutdown. Monolith Productions, not to be confused with Nintendo’s Monolith Software, was shutdown after reports of the Wonder Woman game just not coming together as planned, the studio had celebrated 30 years at the end of 2024.

The final group to be culled was WB Games San Diego, which is a tragedy, but after 6 year since it was formed, they had not released a game at all, to the point now, we don’t even know what they were working on. All of these decisions were made by Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav, who has been raked over the coals, justifiably, for killing off completed movies in order to get tax breaks. He also opted to put the company up for sale, with Netflix putting in the winning bid.

Depending on how things with Netflix shake out, this could be the last year we include this publisher in the list, because their 2024 line up had 4 games and three of them bombed and last year had just two mobile games. Don’t believe me, these are the games that was published in 2025:

  • Game of Thrones: Kingsroad - PC, Android, iOS

  • DC Worlds Collide - Android, iOS

As was said above, there were also some studio closures for this group as well, these are the studios that were closed in 2025:

  • Monolith Productions

  • Player First Games

  • WB Games San Diego

WB Games Montreal were also impacted, with around ~25 staff left go from the group.

If you are curious to see how we did in years past, you can find our 2025, 2024, 2023 and 2022 Previews here.

AVALANCHE SOFTWARE

Known for: Disney Infinity | Last game released: Hogwarts Legacy

I was expecting 2025 to be another quiet year from this studio, if only because they are all in on a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, but they surprised everyone when they dropped a PC only update at the start of the year and then announced that Hogwarts Legacy would becoming to Nintendo Switch 2 at launch. They did not do the port, no that was done by Nintendo’s own Shiver Entertainment, who have worked with WB Games before on Mortal Kombat ports to Switch.

So, with Avalanche not being the leads on the Switch 2 port, that means they are all in on Hogwarts Legacy 2 right? Well maybe not, as it turns out they have a number of jobs for “a new online multiplayer RPG.” Now it is possible that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is going to let folks run around the Wizarding World together, but more likely it is for a new game. The listings also describe it as a live-service game, which given how almost everyone one of those has bombed lately, including Suicide Squad, would be a unique path to take. This year will mark 3 years since their last game first released, so I imagine we might get a teaser for the next entry later in the year.

NETHERREALM STUDIOS

Known for: Mortal Kombat, Injustice | Last game released: Mortal Kombat 1

2023 saw this group release Mortal Kombat 1 and over the next 18 months they would support the game with new fighters and more. All of that wrapped up last year when the studio released the Khaos Edition, which included all the DLC fighters, game expansion and other updates. That was in May and when that was announced, they did state that they were done with content for the game, minus any gameplay fixes that needed to happen. I would be remiss if I did not mention the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, which released last year and while these guys were not involved with its creation, it is a love letter to the series, so it was worth pointing out.

Back to the the no more DLC for Mortal Kombat 1, they said they were done as they were swapping to their next project. The real catch is that we don’t know what it is, the studio has some open roles, and they do list a new game is coming, but there are no details. One of the listings does specify that some familiarity with Mortal Kombat, Injustice or other fighters would be nice to have, so take from that what you will. I said last year that we were unlikely to hear anything from them past June and unless they have a trailer for their next game (Injustice 3?) this June, I suspect it will be another dead year for this group.

ROCKSTEADY STUDIOS

Known for: Batman Arkham | Last game released: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

After Suicide Squad failed to kill any sales charts, the game ended support with an offline mode and then that was it. That was the start of last year and since then, the studio has been fairly quiet on what is next. They do have a number of open roles, from which I have been able to work out they have a game in production, crazy I know. Actually, the only thing I can determine is they are considering the game an AAA title and it will have combat, which does not narrow things down at all.

Now it is possible that this new game is one of the projects that James Gunn was eluding to last year, but until it is revealed, or more descriptive job posts are shared, who knows. The studio does not have a great track record of releasing games with any predictability, it took them 9 years to bring Suicide Squad to players after Arkham Knight, so given it has only been two years, I imagine we hear nothing this year, but get a trailer next year.

TT GAMES

Known for: Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman, Lego Marvel | Last game released: LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

This one is pretty easy, as Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is coming out, at least for most platforms, this May 29th. With the date set and assuming no delays, I expect we will see them pop up over the next few months while they hype it up. The only thing we are really waiting on now is the Nintendo Switch 2 release date and if there will be any post release DLC. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga got a LOT of that, so I expect more of the same from this game.

All the studios below have the full name of WB Games and then the location in the name, i.e. WB Games Boston. To keep it simple, we are just using the studio location.

MONTRÉAL

Known for: Batman: Arkham Origins | Last game released: Gotham Knights

We are now a few years since the release of Gotham Knights, and since then the Montreal studio was reported to have been working on the Wonder Woman game, which with its cancellation, resulted in layoffs at the studio last year. The studio did have another title in development, that was cancelled a few years back, if reports are to be believed, but that was then, what about now?

I have found a few open roles for things like cinematics and levels and game world, which could honestly be for anything. The studio has a large number of staff and they have supported development on other WB Games releases over the year, so it could even be for something else being lead by another team. Honestly, at this point I suspect the team won’t be heard from for a while, as they scope out whatever this new game is.

BOSTON

Known for: Batman: Arkham Underworld, The Lord of the Rings Online | Last game released: Game of Thrones: Conquest

The studio mostly spent 2025 working on their single mobile game, Game of Thrones: Conquest, which is currently running a special event centered around the new upcoming series. Last year they did have a number of open roles they were looking to fill, this year that is not the case. I did find some references to there being some unannounced project in the works at the studio, but I have no more details than that.

If they have been working on something else beyond a single mobile game, given that released back in 2017, I would imagine that it is time to announce what is next this year, but who knows if that will happen.

NEW YORK

Not a main developer, the studio tends to focus more on tools and analytics of games, in order to help other studios get things done on time. As such, there is no game expected from them this year, or likely any year.

SAN FRANCISCO

Known for: Fantastic Beasts: Cases From the Wizarding World | Last game released: DC Worlds Collide

After years of silence, 2025 saw the San Francisco group release DC Worlds Collide, another mobile game that lets players build squads of teams, as they fight against the Crime Syndicate, backing up Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. The game got updates across the year, with the last major one being the Season of Poison.

The game had pretty frequent patch updates across the year, so I would expect more of the same. Now there are reports that there we layoffs done at the end of 2025 at this group, but we have not been able to confirm how many folks were impacted. Will that change the strategy for work, I don’t think so. I expect this time to keep this mobile game going for a while, but given how badly some of the recent titles from WB Games have gone, this is not as sure of a thing as it used to be.

And that is WB Games done. What do you think, will they have a better year that last year? Or are you expecting Lego Batman to be their own release in 2026?
