Ghost of Yōtei reveals new details via its State of Play

PlayStation and developer Sucker Punch hosted a State of Play all about Ghost of Yōtei and thanks to the roughly 25-minute showcase, we got to learn a lot of new details.

Atsu is on a quest for revenge, tracking down a gang of six people, known as the Yōtei Six, who brutally murdered her family. As such she wears a mask that resembles an Onryō, a ghost known for seeking vengeance and something she is embracing in order to keep those enemies off balance.

Exploring Japan offers new ways of playing the game, as depending on your actions, new options will be made available to you. This includes bounties, something Atsu has for herself, but the bounties you can track will net you money, which you can use for upgrades.

The world is also home to a series of shrines called Alters of Reflection, which you can discover as you explore, or buy a map of a region. These shrines are for upgrading skills, so tracking them down will be worth your time. But maps are not the only way of discovering the world, at any point you can use your spyglass to mark a location you can see and ride towards it. If you ride through the ‘stream’ of flowers in open plains, you will ride faster.

Combat has gotten an overhaul from the first game, not only is Atsu a one woman army, able to leap into a fight on her own. Atsu has a variety of tools in her arsenal, including chains, swords, bows and even guns. Once you are in combat, you can quickly swap between weapons, perfect for counting any weapon you might encounter. Just be aware, that if you take a big hit from an enemy, your weapon might be thrown from your hands, leaving you defenceless for a moment or two.

Atsu won’t always be a lone wolf, there are some companions that will join your fight, including a wolf. These companions and certain vendors and masters will also come to you at campsites, perfect for when they have an upgrade or new armours to buy. The developers have said that rather than Atsu having to go to these people for items, they will come to you.

The game may look stunning, but it will also sound incredible as you can discover for yourself, as two of the tracks are available to listen to right now.

Atsu’s Theme

As for modes of play, there are a few options, standard, subtitled - which means Japanese dialogue and subtitles in your chosen language. Samurai Cinema adds in Kurasawa mode, putting the game into black and white, adding in more grain and wind, all designed to replicate the feel of a movie made by the legendary Japanese director. Miike Mode moves the camera in closer, adding in more mud and blood to the action and has come from a partnership with Takashi Miike, director of 13 Samurai. Watanabe mode throws in some low-fi tracks, made by the acclaimed director of Samurai Champloo, Shinichirō Watanabe.

Finally, there are two new consoles coming for the game. Both are standard PlayStation 5 consoles, with black accents across its face and controller and the other comes with gold accents across its body and controller. There is no word on local availability at this time, but we should get confirmation soon.

The good news is that the controllers are also going to be sold on their own, so if you already have the console and just want the controller you are in luck.

PlayStation Australia have confirmed the following will be made available:

PS5 Console – Ghost of Yōtei Gold Limited Edition Bundle

  • Available at select retailers in limited quantities

PlayStation 5 (model group – slim) Console Covers – Ghost of Yōtei Gold Limited Edition

  • Available at select retailers in limited quantities

PlayStation 5 Pro Console Covers – Ghost of Yōtei Gold Limited Edition

  • Available at select retailers in limited quantities

DualSense Wireless Controller – Ghost of Yōtei Gold Limited Edition

  • Available at select retailers in limited quantities

So, the Gold controller and console bundles are coming to Australia, not the Black offerings. This is not ideal, as the Black does look cool, but ordering from overseas is also possible. Pre-order details have not been announced, but they do tend to wait a few weeks after the announcement, but once we know, we will let you know.

As an added option, the gold style plates will also be sold on their own for the Slim PlayStation 5, the all-digital Slim PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 Pro, so existing owners are not going to be left out.
