What Are Ubisoft Working On… A Look At Their Studios

What Are Ubisoft Working On… A Look At Their Studios

Ubisoft are best known for their larger series like Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy’s anything, but they also produce more mobile games than others and still somehow always have something in the works.

What does 2024 have in store for the French game maker? Well we know they are kicking it off with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which is very good, with Skull and Bones to follow soon after. They will also keep support going for a host of games like Rainbow Six Siege, The Crew Motorfest, For Honor and countless others.

What else could they be up to? Let us take a look and find out.

1492 STUDIO

Last Game Released: Is It Love? Scandals | Series: Is It Love series

At the end of 2022, 1942 Studio released the last updates for a host of their Is It Love titles and since then, they have been radio silent. Well that might be generous as there is no word on them at all, even their LinkedIn page is now MIA. With the studio founders gone, the apps without updates for over a year and there no word on what is going on, it is likely this studio has been shut down, but there is nothing official on that.

BLUE MAMMOTH GAMES

Last Game Released: Brawlhalla | Series: None

Best known for their free-to-play fighting game Brawlhalla, Blue Mammoth Games spent 2023 releasing new content for the game. They added four new playable characters to the game and had four crossover events take place, with Halo, Tekken and SpongeBob SquarePants joining the roster.

Given the studio has been very consistent with their updates, nothing more is expected in 2024 from the studio.

FUTURE GAMES OF LONDON

Last Game Released: Hungry Shark Evolution | Series: Hungry Shark series

2023 was an odd year for this studio, as in September it was revealed that they were losing their Hungry Shark series, with it making the jump to Barcelona Mobile. Reports then surfaced that the studio was going to be going through the UK’s 30 day terminating process, where companies must disclose the proposal of closure to all staff.

That took effect in October 2023, with the studio releasing a statement that they were going to close. This makes the last time this studio will appear in this list.

GREEN PANDA GAMES

Last Game Released: Idle Space Station | Series: Many

Last year saw this studio release a few games, keeping up with their release cadence. However as a mobile developer, we only really learn about those releases when the game goes live.

The studio is hiring for a number of roles, but as their games usually consist of the same objectionable mobile game mechanics, they don’t give any insight as to what those next games will be. As they release fairly often, we should see their name this year.

KETCHAPP

Last Game Released: Rider Worlds | Series: Many

Another mobile developer, they released Rider Worlds in 2023, as well as updating a number of their existing games. The studio is not actively hiring for anything new at the time of publishing, so we have no idea what they are working on.

KOLIBRI GAMES

Last Game Released: Idle Bank Tycoon: Money Game | Series: Idle Tycoon series

After releasing two titles in 2022, the studio has gone pretty quiet, only releasing updates to many of their existing titles across 2023 and even now in 2024. The studio is hiring for a few roles, but there is no word from them about what is next. Odds are the studio has something new to release this year, likely in their Idle series, for now we just need to wait to find out what it is.

MASSIVE ENTERTAINMENT

Last Game Released: Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora | Series: The Division series

After years of waiting, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora finally released in 2023, though it was in December, so it only just made it. The studio also released new updates for The Division 2, keeping that title going and of course, they revealed Star Wars Outlaws.

2024 will see them release two story expansions for Avatar and if that was not enough 2024 could be when the first scoundrel based Star Wars game is released, but there is actually no release window for it, though the Disney Parks Blog did state 2024. Given the silence since its reveal, the team are clearly just working on the title, but who knows, maybe the force will be with this one.

OWLIENT

Last Game Released: Howrse | Series: Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad

Since 2005, this studio has kept Howrse going, but the last update for the game was released back in 2022. 2021 saw the studio shut down their Tom Clancy game and since then, they really haven’t been public about whatever is next for the studio.

Given the last update for Howrse was also the first in 2 years, that means the studio has been without any major release since 2021, so its highly like they have something new coming. They have a few jobs open, but there is nothing in them that indicates what they might be working on, so for now we wait.

RED STORM ENTERTAINMENT

Last Game Released: Assassin's Creed Nexus VR | Series: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series, Star Trek: Bridge Crew

After being silent for a number of years on their own projects, 2023 saw the team where the Tom Clancy games started - given the author founded the studio that makes sense, release Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR.

The studio is also working on The Division Heartland, though they are being supported by other studios. The game has no release date yet, not even hints at a window, but given they are still looking for a few roles, there is likely still some dev time ahead of the game, so for now we wait.

All the following studios are officially called ‘Ubisoft Location’, so in order to keep it simple, we will just use the location name for them.

ABU DHABI

Last Game Released: Clash of Beasts: Tower Defense | Series: Growtopia, NCIS: Hidden Crimes

2022 saw the studio develop their own original game, but once that was out the door, they gave support to RedLynx for the game Gwen’s Getaway, which features that horrible combination of game mechanics that make no sense.

The studio is looking to fill a few roles, so they have something cooking, but as a mobile developer we will have to wait and see what it is.

ANNECY

Last Game Released: Riders Republic | Series: Steep

2021 saw the studio release Riders Republic and since then they have released quite a number of seasons, bringing new gear, challenges and more to the game. 2023 saw the studio at Skateboarding into the game, along with all the mechanics that go along with it.

Given the studio seems keen to support Riders Republic for a bit, there is unlikely to be a sequel anytime soon, however seasonal updates are likely. The studio is also working on Star Wars Outlaws, supporting Massive Entertainment, which depending on the amount of staff working on that, could impact any future title releases.

BARCELONA

Last Game Released: Star Trek: Bridge Crew | Series: Your Shape

What was a studio making original games, is now a support studio working on Rainbow Six Siege content, given that the game shows no signs of slowing down, its unlikely to let them work on something new anytime soon.

BARCELONA MOBILE

Last Game Released: Hungry Dragon | Series: Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians

The mobile side of Barcelona, has seen the studio keep content coming for their games and the Hungry Shark series that they picked up late last year.

As for what is next, the studio is working on Invincible: Guarding the Globe, which is expected to release at the end of February 2024, so once that launches, expect it to be added to their long term support list. Beyond that, I don’t expect anything new to appear from this group.

BELGRADE

Last Game Released: Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint | Series: Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon DLC, Riders Republic DLC

For a while there, the Belgrade studio was the PC port house for Ubisoft, then they were the Stadia port house and now they are the development support house, so they are good with ports of all kinds. The studio spent 2023 helping out with the development on both Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

While they might be working on things, like Skull and Bones, there are no open job listings to give any sort of hint as to what it might be. They have however spent time in 2023 kicking off a second season of their podcast series, where they talk about all things game development related. Just note as the studio is located in Serbia, they speak Serbian in it, so subtitles will need to be turned on.

BERLIN

The Berlin branch is a co-dev studio, meaning they are always assisting other with titles, one of the more recently shipped was Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Given they tend to be a support studio and not a lead, a new game from them is unlikely.

BORDEAUX

Last Game Released: Assassin's Creed Mirage | Series: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla DLC

For the longest time the Bordeaux brand of Ubisoft was a DLC studio, creating new content for games already released, but in 2023 that changed when they took the lead of a new Assassin’s Creed title. There are no plans for DLC for the game, so outside of a few patches, there shouldn’t be much from them this year.

This year though will see the two locations that the studio currently uses, merge into one new custom built facility, in the Bastide-Niel eco-neighbourhood. This facility will bring La Forge, their R&D arm and Tech branch, their online services facility together as well. The studio is also still supporting development for Beyond Good and Evil 2, and just hours before we hit publish on this, the studio revealed BattleCore Arena.

BUCHAREST

The team at Bucharest assisted in 2023 with the development of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, The Crew: Motorfest and even Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, with that last one making sense, as the studio is also currently supporting Massive Entertainment with The Division 2 content and development support on Star Wars Outlaws.

Given they tend to be quite supporting, expect to see their name in credits of more than a few titles released this year, but not as the lead studio.

CHENGDU

A support studio and localisation house, the team spent 2023 helping with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, The Crew: Motorfest and The Settlers: New Allies. Given their support nature, we will see their name in 2024, we just have to wait.

DA NANG

Last Game Released: Trackmania Blitz | Series: Many

Best known for their work on Nano, a free-to-play site where anyone can play quick, yet fun games featuring a host of Ubisoft characters. The studio has produced a few titles for Assassin’s Creed, Rabbids and even a Bomberman clone.

2024 will have the studio release two games, if all goes to plan, Tom Clancy’s Shootout and Rabbids Volcano Panic, both games were released for a while, but were pulled for improvements. In addition the studio has new roles up for more folks, so they obviously have more in store for 2024.

DÜSSELDORF

Last Game Released: The Settlers: New Allies | Series: ANNO series, The Settlers series

2023 saw this studio finally release The Settlers: New Allies after its last minute delay, but in a surprising move, the game was also revealed for consoles when it launched on PC. This was not some coming in 2024 release, but in fact the game launched on consoles mere months after its PC launch, surprising many. The studio also assisted with development of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora in 2023 as well.

Given the studio released a game in 2023, there is unlikely to be anything new from them this year, DLC or updates for The Settlers: New Allies, even ANNO 1800 are the likely things from them this year. They are also assisting with development on Beyond Good & Evil 2, so take that however you want.

HALIFAX

Last Game Released: Assassin’s Creed Rebellion | Series: None

The studios only released title is Assassin’s Creed Rebellion and for years, they delivered content updates and fixes all the time, however that appears to have stopped in March of 2023. The game is still available, there are just no reports of any new updates for it since then, or coming.

The studio is currently assisting in the development of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Mobile, a mobile adaptation of the horrible Rainbow Six Siege. The game entered into an extra closed beta state in March 2023, timing.. but since then, there has been nothing on the game. It is likely we will hear from this group in 2024, just whenever new details for Rainbow Six Mobile are released.

IVORY TOWER

Last Game Released: The Crew Motorfest | Series: The Crew series

When 2023 started, I said we would hear from this group again, with them hiring for a new project. Given the cancellation wave in 2022, there was no telling if that game was one of them, but surprise it was not as The Crew Motorfest was announced and released last year.

Since release the studio has been keeping the seasonal content coming, with Season 2 launching at the start of December. Given the support they gave to the second game, expect to see their name throughout 2024 as more seasons are released.

KYIV

Known as a co-dev studio, the Kyiv branch assists with whatever they are tasked to do, for 2023 that meant Assassin’s Creed Mirage and in the past that meant Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon and Watch_Dogs.

We know the studio is working on Rainbow Six Mobile and while they are recruiting for a few positions, the scope of those roles does not indicate anything new or special, so for now we just have to wait to see their name.

LEAMINGTON

A twin studio to Reflections, the Leamington branch assists with development of everything. 2023 saw them working on both Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR, but what about 2024?

Well the studio is hiring for a lot of roles, almost 2 dozen and most of them are flagged as for a New IP. Given there are a lot of animation roles, some referring to being for character animation, you might think platformer or action game, but there are also some vehicle programmer roles. Who knows maybe Driver is getting a revival, either way, given they are staffing up it is unlikely we will hear from them in 2024.

MAINZ

Last Game Released: Anno 1800 Console Edition | Series: Anno series

The third of the German studios, Mainz has been where the Anno series has lived, with the Console Edition of Anno 1800 being their most recent release.

The studio is working on Beyond Good & Evil 2, but beyond that they are also hiring for a new project. All we know for that one is its made in Unreal, which is a bit odd given Ubisoft have their own game engines. They are also looking to hire for another Anno related role, no word if that is for more content or an all-new game.

MILAN

Last Game Released: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope | Series: Mario + Rabbids series

2022 saw the studio release their second title as a lead, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and then 2023 saw them release a wave of content across the year, ending with Rayman joining the battle.

Given that they have just wrapped the content for that game, its unlikely that they will have their own new game ready to go, however they are known to support other studios from time to time, so we still might see their name this year.

MONTPELLIER

Last Game Released: Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown | Series: Rayman series, Rabbids series

Without a release of their own since 2019, the Montpellier studio delivered a mobile sequel to Valliant Hearts in 2023 and have already kicked off 2024 with Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

With that game out now, there is unlikely anything else we will get from them this year, their support for Star Wars Outlaws not being counted here, unless of course Beyond Good & Evil 2 finally starts showing things again. First announced in 2008, then revealed proper in 2017, the game had a second showing in 2018 and since then it has been radio silent.

MONTREAL

Last Game Released: Roller Champions | Series: Assassin’s Creed series, Rainbow Six series

2023 was a quiet year for the largest studio in the Ubisoft development house, they didn’t release a single game with their name as the lead. Not counting 2021, which was a flow on from Covid-19, this has never happened, but I am sure the folks enjoyed the extra development time on their upcoming titles.

The studio is the lead for Rainbow Six Mobile and are still working on the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which was last reported to have restarted development. We also know that the studio is working on Assassin's Creed Project Hexe, which has yet to be given a full name, platforms or any sort of details. The studio is also still delivering content for Roller Champions, just not via seasons anymore. Given their size, they likely have more cooking, they have a large number of jobs open right now, so we should hear from them this year.

MUMBAI

Mostly a QA studio, it is unlikely the team will have their own game in 2024, but we should still see their name in the credits of a few releases.

NADEO

Last Game Released: Trackmania | Series: Trackmania series

Since 2003 this studio has released a lot of Trackmania titles, though mixed in were a few virtual skipper releases. The last game dropping in 2020, has seen a fair amount of consistent content updates, with the December 2023 release bring some iconic cars back from past games.

Already in 2024 the studio has released a new Winter themed campaign, clearly just catering for the northern hemisphere, but they should keep new content coming across the year.

ODESA

A much smaller team than we have seen from Ubisoft, they support other studios in the Ukraine region and provide quality assurance where needed, as such they don’t have any games in development.

OSAKA

Last Game Released: Rocksmith+ | Series: South Park: The Fractured But Whole

The studio here is a sister studio to the San Francisco group, so what one works on, so does the other. The studio assisted with Rocksmith over the past year and will likely keep doing that going forward.

2024 will see them also continue to help develop XDefiant, the new FPS game that had a few tests in 2023, but currently has no release date.

PARIS

Last Game Released: Just Dance 2024 Edition | Series: Just Dance series, Ghost Recon series

This is the home of the Just Dance series, which ended 2023 with the addition of a selection of Disney songs being added to the game. Of course, the studio has released a few seasonal events for each year the game is out, so that is unlikely to change in 2024.

The studio will be back this year with more Just Dance, the series has not missed an entry since the 2009 debut. The studio is also working on Star Wars Outlaws beside the team at Massive Entertainment, so yet another reason we will see their name this year. What could throw things out though, is that the team are hiring for things they describe as ‘New AAA Project’, now that could be new Ghost Recon, as the series has been quiet for a bit, or it could be something entirely new. Whatever it is, it is unlikely we will hear about it this year, but it could impact other things.

PARIS MOBILE

Last Game Released: Mighty Quest Rogue Palace | Series: Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, Might and Magic : Chess Royale

Last we heard the studio was filling new positions for a then unannounced title, but in May 2023, the game was revealed to be another entry in their Might Quest series, which is tied to that tv show. The only weird thing, the game is published by Netflix and not Ubisoft. Given they will support that, its unlikely we will hear something from them this year.

PHILIPPINES

Better known as a support studio to the Singapore office, the Philippines team has been around for 8 years now and in that time, they have not released their own title. Given their support nature, they are unlikely to be the lead on a game, anytime soon. In fact they were a development support studio in 2023 for Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Their 2024 is off to a big start though, as the studio has moved into an all-new office, you can check out photos of it here.

PUNE

Another support studio, they spent 2023 assisting with Assassin's Creed: Nexus VR, The Crew: Motorfest, Gwen's Getaway, Invincible: Guarding the Globe, The Settlers: New Allies and Valiant Hearts: Coming Home.

Given their usual work they will appear again in 2024, the studio is one of the ones working on Rainbow Six Mobile, so that is another chance to hear from them this year.

QUEBEC

Last Game Released: Immortals Fenyx Rising | Series: Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Critical Hour

It has been a few year since the Quebec branch of Ubisoft released a game that they were the lead on, but that could change in 2024. We know when the Assassin’s Creed showcase happened that they were picking up the reigns of the series again, working on the Infinity hub along with Assassin's Creed Codename Red, which is the first game set in Japan in the series.

The only reason why this could be their year, is because the studio was aiming for a 2024 release for the game, the first of the 3 revealed to be given any sort of date. Of course, the game has not been officially revealed yet, with the studio only having one open role, after laying off nearly 100 in November, so they should be on track. Will there be a Ubisoft Forward reveal, or will this leak like many other entries, for now we don’t know but finding out will be great.

REDLYNX

Last Game Released: Gwen’s Getaway| Series: Trials series

After years of Trials games, the studio changed tracks in 2017 with the release of South Park: Phone Destroyer, which seems to have given then a mobile dev bug as in 2023 the studio released Gwen’s Getaway.

With that being a new mobile game, full of that usual random bag of mechanics and updates, they would be focused on that for the foreseeable future.

REFLECTIONS

Last Game Released: Ode | Series: Driver series

For a while the studio known as Reflections were making the series Driver, with a few entries under their belt, then they were tasked with helping make The Crew, but since that release they have been relegated to a supporting role for other projects, like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

The studio is currently hiring for a number of roles, all connected to a ‘New IP’, so we will have to wait and see what becomes of it. Like their sister studio Leamington, there are vehicle roles included, so I am still crossing fingers for a Driver revival.

SAGUENAY

These guys are a support studio, that help create the tools to allow for online play and components for Ubisoft titles, they don’t actively make games.

SAN FRANCISCO

Last Game Released: Rocksmith+ | Series: Rocksmith series

While supporting the release of Rocksmith+ in 2023, which included the addition of Piano support, the studio has also been working hard on XDefiant. However the last update in September 2023 does not paint a great picture for the game, as the submission process for certification failed. What this meant was that there were major issues with the game, meaning it would result if a poor player experience upon release.

Since then the team have been very quiet, working on getting the game up to the standards they want and what players expect, with a message stating the games launch has been delayed indefinitely. What this means is up to anyone to work out, the game could launch tomorrow or 18 months from now. However rather than guessing a date, we just need to wait until the team speak up, given the months of silence, hopefully that changes soon.

SHANGHAI

Like in years passed, the Shanghai studio is known for assisting others, they continue to assist with content for The Division 2, and last year helped with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. We know that the studio is assisting with both Star Wars Outlaws and Rainbow Six Mobile as well, so we should see more from them on those this year.

In addition to those games, the studio is actively hiring for Just Dance related roles, as well as some LaForge R&D roles, so there is more going on here than just Star Wars and Rainbow Six, we just have to wait and see what comes from the hires.

SINGAPORE

Last Game Released: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms | Series: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms

The Singapore studio was founded initially to create more content for Assassin’s Creed games, which lead to them crafting the great boating sections in Assassin’s Creed 3, which inspired countless other games to include boating and then in 2017, the studio was revealed to be working on Skull and Bones.

Over the past few years, the game has appeared quite a bit, often being dated for release and then delayed, it is currently dated to release in February 2024 and while I am confident that it will actually release this time, given their track record, some scepticism is expected. If they ship the game, then expect to see content coming from them across the rest of 2024.

SOFIA

Last Game Released: Assassin's Creed Mirage | Series: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla DLC

Having released the Assassin’s Creed Ezio Trilogy onto Switch and the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Dawn of Ragnarok DLC in 2022, the studio kept their support of the series going, as one of the co-dev studios for Assassin’s Creed Mirage in 2023.

Currently the studio is hiring a small number of roles, but none of them list anything to exciting. Given they tend to be more support related than lead dev, it is likely we will see there name in 2024, in some capacity.

STOCKHOLM

Last Game Released: None | Series: None

The Stockholm studio is where Scalar is being developed, a cloud based technology that opens up development to more than just single machines. With that technology the studio is creating a new game, but they have been doing that for a few years now and there is still no word on what it might be.

Given that they are looking to hire a Game Director for this new IP, odds are we won’t see it anytime soon, so for now, just imagine what it could be.

TORONTO

Last Game Released: Far Cry 6 | Series: Watch_Dogs series, Far Cry series, Starlink Battle for Atlas

2023 was a quiet year for Toronto, as they were one of the support studios for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, but they have apparently also been quietly working on their Splinter Cell Remake, still hiring jobs for it back in October 2023.

Right now they are looking to fill jobs for that game, as well as something connected to Far Cry. Given the last game released back in 2021, a new game being revealed this year for a release in 2025 is likely.

So there we go, a lot to look forward too, along with a number of mysterious projects. How close did we get, we will have to wait to see, but what do you think?
