Star Wars: The Movies in development

Last year we pulled together a list of all the Star Wars movies in development and there was only one movie in that list that had a title or release date, that list of confirmed has grown ever so slightly.
Last year we just listed everything without order, but this year we are putting things into buckets, in order to keep things easier to track, starting off with the movies that have titles.
Confirmed with titles
The Mandalorian & Grogu
Release Date: May 21, 2026 | Era: The New Republic
This was the only movie from last year’s list that had a title, and little has changed in the past 12 months. Well, that is not entirely true as we have additional casting, with Sigourney Weaver joining the line up, Steve Blum voicing Garazeb Orrelios or Zeb as he is also known. We also know that the BD-X droids, which wander around Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland will be in the movie. Footage of the movie was shown at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025, but only to those who got into the Lucasfilm panel. It is likely that we will see a trailer by October, given the movie is out in May next year.
Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Favreau and a few special friends came together to celebrate The Mandalorian and Grogu during Star Wars Celebration Japan.

Star Wars Starfighter
Release Date: May 27, 2027 | Era: New Jedi Order
In last years list, we had this one flagged as a rumour as there had been nothing confirmed about Shawn Levy making a Star Wars movie. Of course, at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025, the confirmation was delivered by having Levy walk out onto the stage. After talking a little, he then welcomed the movies star Ryan Gosling onto the stage. Little is known about the movie, but we know it will take place 5 years after the events of Rise of Skywalker and will have Gosling play a new character, who is a pilot. It is very unlikely that this movie has anything to do with the game of the same name.

Confirmed in development
For the below movies, we are just listing the directors, as there is no formal name for them.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
Release Date: Unknown | Era: New Jedi Order
There have been no confirmed changes to this one since it was first announced back in 2023. There were reports in December 2024 that the movies writer was no longer attached to the project. Steven Knight was the writer and also the creator of Peaky Blinders, so if true, his leaving could just be due to other commitments. In June 2024, speaking with Variety while talking about her new documentary, Obaid-Chinoy said that the story “that interests me most is in Rey’s journey as a female Jedi. That’s how I can best bring my experiences to it.”
The movie has a new writer in George Nolfi and star Daisy Ridley is aware of the overall story, as she told Comicbook.com
“I have not read the latest script, but I know what’s happening, and I know the story, and I think what feels really good is that George is a phenomenal writer. I think we’re making sure that this story is the best way, this script is the best way to tell the story. And I think it will be worthwhile for everyone watching it, and I am very excited”
So, with a new writer on board, the star and director both seemingly on board with how things are shaping, this could be the next movie to enter production, or it could spend another year in development limbo.
James Mangold
Release Date: Unknown | Era: Dawn of the Jedi
Much like the above production, the James Mangold directed movie has not made any progress in 2 years, but at the time the director was finishing up on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Earlier this year, Mangold did reveal a little about his movie when speaking with MovieWeb. This is what he said:
The Star Wars movie would be taking place 25,000 years before any known Star Wars movies takes place. It's an area and a playground that I've always [wanted to explore] and that I was inspired by as a teenager. I'm not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it's almost immovable, and you can't please anybody.
Now we knew from the first confirmation of his involvement at Star Wars Celebration 2023, that the movie would take place around the founding of the Jedi. Now there are reports that the movie could begin filming in early 2026, but those are more rumour than fact, so for now we will just need to wait and see.
Taika Waititi
Release Date: Unknown | Era: Unknown
It has now been more than 5 years since it was confirmed that Taika Waititi would be writing and directing an all-new Star Wars movie and, in that time, there have been constant reports that he was working on the script, but not much else. In an interview with Deadline earlier this year, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had the following to say about the script:
“Well, I keep waiting for Taika [Waititi], and he is working with another writer now. He’s so busy. I love him. I think if we ever do get a script from Taika, it’s going to be fantastic. I already saw a first act that I loved, but tying him down, it’s tricky.”
Given the lengthy development time between the announcement of Waititi working on Star Wars and today and the lack of actual verifiable progress, there is honestly no telling where things stand with this movie. We did learn at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025, that Tony McNamara was now working on the script with Waititi, so that hopefully is a sign of things moving forward, but who can say at this point in time.
Simon Kinberg Trilogy
Release Date: Unknown | Era: Unknown
The latest movie revealed to be happening, Simon Kinberg is no stranger to Star Wars, as he co-created Star Wars Rebels. It was confirmed last year that he was going back to a galaxy far, far away to make a new movie, well three new movies. This was only confirmed late last year, so there have not been any big reveals on the production since then. What we do have is a little bit from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, from that same Deadline interview.
“We’re absolutely rolling fast and furiously. That has gone exceptionally well, and he’s literally going to script as we speak. We’ll see something probably around June. Simon, if you remember, he did some work with us years ago with the animated show, which was a really wonderful collaborative experience. And he then got very, very busy with X-Men and then recently became available again, and he segued into this space beautifully. We’re really excited about where that’s headed.”
What we do know is that this new trilogy of movies is set to be the beginning of a new saga. There is no telling where in the giant timeline of Star Wars it takes place, but I personally would love to see it thousands of years past the Skywalkers, so we can start fresh, the opposite to the James Mangold production as it were.
Dave Filoni film
Release Date: Unknown | Era: The New Republic/Rise of the First Order
The last of the confirmed movies, though honestly this one has likely been axed for now, Dave Filoni is a name many TV Star Wars fans know. The last time we had confirmation of this movie happening was back in 2023 when it was announced and since then, there has been a whole lot of nothing.
Even starwars.com, in their reveal of Star Wars Starfighter, Filoni’s name is missing from their line-up of film projects. We know he is working on season 2 of Ahsoka, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord and working with Jon Favreau on the new The Mandalorian and Grogu movie. With a plate as loaded as that, it would not surprise me to see the movie has slipped from his schedule, it is also possible the movie evolved into The Mandalorian and Grogu, we just don’t know.
Rumoured to be in development
For the below movies, they are rumoured to be in development, but there has been either no official confirmation of them happening, or they were confirmed but have slipped out into rumour.
Lando
Release Date: Unknown | Era: Age of Rebellion
This is another one that seemed to be full steam ahead and then just ran out of steam. It was first reported to be a tv series, then evolved into a movie and now, who knows. The last update around this one was in September 2024 when Donald Glover, who played Lando in the Solo: A Star Wars Story movie, said that he “hopes everyone can enjoy his Star Wars film.”
Given that there has never been any official word on this one from Lucasfilm, if it is happening, it is likely a while away yet, but who knows, stranger things have happened.
Rogue Squadron
Release Date: Unknown | Era: Unknown
This was the first big movie announced that got fans excited, because the Rogue Squadron games, comics and novels were fantastic. The movie was set to enter production soon after it was announced and then events happened, with director Patty Jenkins swapping to direct Wonder Woman 3 first, but that got cancelled.
Recent reports say it is back on and with Chris Pine attached, but in October 2024, Jenkins was reported to be directing a live-action Lego movie and then of course at Star Wars Celebration, we got Starfighter. Which, unless Lucasfilm really believes they can do two flight-based Star Wars movies, has likely seen this one put back on hold, if not cancelled, I personally am leaning towards the latter.
There has been no official cancelation of Droids: A Star Wars Story, the animated movie, but it’s been more than 4 years since we saw it, so we are calling time of death. As for Rian Johnson’s proposed trilogy, there is no way that is going ahead anymore, with Kenedy seemingly forgetting to talk about it at all.
Below are the eras of Star Wars, with BBY being the focal point for the timeline. BBY stands for Before Battle of Yavin, the events at the end of the original movie.
