Dragon Quest celebrates 35 years by announcing a slew of new games, just no platforms yet
Square Enix promised big news for Dragon Quest’s 35th anniversary and they somewhat delivered, I say somewhat, because they showed off a lot of content, but didn’t announce platforms for most of them, but regardless, there is a chance most will come to the west.
First though, series creator Yuji Horii released a special message, which you can read below.
DRAGON QUEST series creator and game designer Yuji Horii shared his gratitude to fans for their continued support of the franchise over the past 35 years: “I’d like to thank the fans who have always loved the DRAGON QUEST series and who have continued to support it throughout the years, along with the new players who are just beginning their journey in the world of DRAGON QUEST. I hope we can continue to celebrate the series for another 35 years to come!”
DRAGON QUEST XII
Little is known about the next mainline chapter in the Dragon Quest series, except the story is complete and the game should have a new battle system.
The game was known to be in development last year, but it was a very minor release of information, sadly that hasn’t changed today. While we do have the video and word that it is being built in Unreal Engine 5, perhaps the biggest news we know, is that the game will be released simultaneously around the world, a first for the series.
DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake
Square Enix have opted to make use of their HD-2D system, which was created for Octopath Traveler and the upcoming ‘Project Triangle Strategy’ to remake Dragon Quest III.
Featuring the same visual style, because of the unique pixel look, it manages to keep the spirit of the original game, which was released back in 1988 originally. The game is aiming for an early 2022 release in Japan, but like the title above, there are no platforms announced for this game yet.
DRAGON QUEST TREASURES
Dragon Quest Treasures is an all new entry in the series, featuring Mia and Erik from Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age as they undertake a treasure hunting adventure in another world, set before the events of Dragon Quest XI.
There are no platforms announced for this one, but given the range of platforms their debut game came out on, it could hit most, but for now, all we have is the trailer.
DRAGON QUEST KESHI KESHI (Final Name TBC)
Finally, the last game revealed as coming to the West is Dragon Quest Keshi Keshi, or Dragon Quest Eraser, which is a matching type free-to-play mobile game, where you have popular characters, monsters and items, that are now erasers, which are used to erase graffiti in the game.
The game is due to release later in the year in Japan, no word on if its release here will happen at the same time.
