A new model Switch, but with a larger OLED screen, redesigned kickstand and more internal storage
In a move that many could have predicted, given Nintendo love to do this, they announced a new model of the Switch overnight, officially known as the Switch (OLED model), this is the same internals as your base model Switch, but now has a 7inch OLED screen, instead of the 6.2inch that the original models have.
The Switch (OLED model), which for ease of typing I am just going to call the Switch-O, contains a slightly larger screen, gaining .8 of an inch on the angle, which adds roughly 20% more screen size to the unit, but the more impressive part is that the dimensions of the Switch have not changed.
In addition to the screen, the unit now comes with additional storage, 64gb over the 32gb found in other models, it also has improved speakers, to provide clearer and more rich audio.
“The new Nintendo Switch (OLED model) is a great option for players who want to experience the new vibrant screen when playing in handheld and tabletop mode,” said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. “With the addition of this new model to the Nintendo Switch family of systems, people have an additional choice of a system that best fits the gaming experience they desire – whether it’s Nintendo Switch (OLED model), Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite.”
What is most interesting to me is that the kickstand has been redesigned entirely, now there is no longer a flimsy little piece of plastic, but instead a full widebody stand, much like the Microsoft Surface line of hardware.
The new Dock for the Switch-O has also seen a few changings, the back flap now has lines in it, the case has a redesigned fan slot, oh and it now has an ethernet port, in place of the USB that was there, meaning that players who live for stable online connections, can do so, without the need for any adaptors.
As for when you can get this new model, the Switch-O will be out on October 8, same day as Metroid Dread and is priced at $539.95, making it around $70 more expensive than the base model unit. While we have only been showing the new White model, there will be a Switch standard Neon Red and Neon Blue colour offering as well, though it will come with a black dock, with the white dock exclusive to the other one, take a look at the boxes below.
