Fortnite served up some big plays and massive wins at the first Summer Smash

There are a few certain things in life, the sun rises in the east, Coke is superior to Dr Pepper and Fortnite is a massive phenomenon, taking over houses, one gamer at a time. So, for a massive, world wide sporting event, like the Australian Open to host a Fortnite tournament, well its big, but when you consider how much was on offer to win, it took it to a whole new level.

The event ran over 2 days, the first was for the 500 competitors to be whittled down to the top 100; the top 20 from each match were taken to day 2. Day 2 kicked off with those 100 players, fighting for top place, over 6 matches the competition was fierce, there were a lot of kills and a few battle royale victories and the winner walked away with a cool $100,000 dollary-doos. 

The winner was X2Twins, specifically Jesse, one half of the duo, who claimed 3 battle royale wins, as well a second place finish, he walked away with the top prize, but Arkai and NotNaapr took second and third respectively and walked away with $50,000 each, which is nothing to scoff at. In fact anyone who managed to snag a spot in the 100, walked away with $1,000 minimum, if you like stats, here are how each of the top 10 players performed and how many bucks they walked away with.

Once those guys had their shot, it was time for the ProAm to kick in, with celeb players like LazarBeam and LoserFruit playing along side sport and tv stars Nick Kyrgios and Dave Hughes. The matches were won by different teams, so it was always interesting to see how it all played out, while the excitement between matches was slowing down a bit, people were still excited to see players like Dr Lupo in action, even more so when a players like MrFreshAsian was taken out well before the end of a match. 

As for the setup, Fortnite had taken over Margret Court Arena and they did it with a lot of style, there were 100 computers set up, all facing in different directions, in the middle, a large stand, where a lot of the commentary between matches was hosted and down in one corner was the shoutcaster desk, where Dr Lupo, Falloutt and others rotated through, to provide commentary for the matches, both ProAm and Top 100.
