E3 2014 - Far Cry 4 Hands On

When Far Cry 4 was announced I was very happy. Far Cry 3 was a brilliant game and more of that style of game was a welcome thing. So I was happy that I had the chance to go hands on at E3.

Far Cry 4 takes place in the Himalayas around the fictional region of Kryat and has you helping to overthrow a would-be king. Of course playing the game is more important that story and Far Cry 4 was not going to disappoint here. The mission I was presented was to capture a fort, sounds simple enough. The game asked me how I would like to go about it, stealth, on elephant or on the back of a small helicopter. I chose to fly in.

Once airborne I was able to hover around the fort, using my grenade launcher to take out the sniper nests, of course all the time I had to dodge people shooting at me. After I cleared out all that I could see, I landed the helicopter, somewhat unconventionally and then took to taking out the remaining soldiers that were around. The soldiers here were impressive, they reacted really well, splitting into groups to try and hunt me down. I was down to the final few soldiers when more re-enforcements arrived, I messed that up.

So I ran out from my cover and took down the alarms halting anymore from being called, then I went back on the attack. Of course they did not just send a few people to help, they sent a lot as well as armored trucks with machine guns on the back. I used the last of my grenades to attempt to destroy the trucks and succeeded with that, but of course in order to get a clear shot at them I had to stand where I could be seen and that was not a good thing.

Once I was in the open the soldiers were able to swarm my position, I took out the ones near me but then had to fall back to cover because I was hurt, I had used all my medicine so I was patching myself with bandages and regaining very little health. I was in a bad way, until thankfully I saw something that could help greatly. I sprinted around the far side of the fort and jumped atop a mighty elephant. Once on board I was able to charge forward and take out larger groups of enemies with ease, of course I was still getting shot at but I felt that nothing could stop me.

My mission ended with my being shot off the back of the elephant and dying but I knew that I would try again and again until I took out all the soldiers and their support. I had a great time with the game, I knew exactly how the game controlled because it feels like an extension of Far Cry 3. Ubisoft hit the right mix of action and great controls there and they have not messed with the formula here. When the game is released later in the year you can be sure that I am going to be in line to get mine day one.
