Star Wars: The games in development

Star Wars: The games in development

With more than 100 games across the decades, there is no shortage of stories from a galaxy far, far away in videogame form, but that is not stopping some developer from creating their own.

Not long after Disney bought Lucasfilm, Electronic Arts signed a 10 year deal to produce games based on Star Wars and during that time we got 4 titles, Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Battlefront II, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and Star Wars Squadrons. While that studio has more games coming, the exclusivity agreement came to an end last year, so we are set to see more games coming from Ubisoft, Quantic Dream and many more.

Below is a list of all the games currently in development, meaning they are not out yet, with all the latest info that we have. With Star Wars Outlaws being the only game with a release date, let us start there.

STAR WARS: Outlaws

Developer: Massive Entertainment | Publisher: Ubisoft

Release Date: August 30 | Revealed: June 2023

Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC

Way back in January 2021, Ubisoft surprised a great many folks when they announced that they were going to make their own Star Wars game, with Massive Entertainment handling the development. It would be 2.5 years between the announcement and the first look at the game, as Star Wars Outlaws was teased at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023, then fully revealed at Ubisoft Forward 2023 just a few days later.

The game has players taking up the role of Kay Vess, a scoundrel who is trying to make their mark on the galaxy and when they really annoy Zerek Besh, a new crime syndicate with a tendency to kill anyone who crosses them. The task is simple, steal all the wealth of the clan and gain your freedom, but to do so you need to hop from planet to planet, avoiding the Empire, bounty hunters and whatever else is out to get you. Perhaps the most interesting part is that the story takes place between Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, with the larger conflict between the Rebellion and the Empire, happening around you.

Currently the game is set to release on August 30th, which isn’t to far away, if you want to pick up the game for yourself, be sure to check out our Bargain Guide for the best deal possible.

Star Wars: Hunters

Developer: BossAlien | Publisher: Zynga

Release Date: June 4, 2024 | Revealed: February 2021

Platforms: Switch, iOS, Android

I know that this game is set to release before Outlaws, however I had written this a week before the feature went live, only for Hunters to get its actual release date, so its here instead.

Star Wars Hunters was first announced way back in February 2021 during a Nintendo Direct and was revealed to be aiming for a late 2021 release. Since then the game got one more Switch trailer and nothing else in the remaining time, until literally days before publishing this, they announced the release date.

The game has been available in selected regions on mobile devices via a soft launch, that is the mobile term for Early Access and in that time has been given new modes, changes, characters and more, like the trailer below shows. While the game now has a release date, given its mobile nature, I would honestly expect to see more content arrive over the first year, but only time will tell.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor

Developer: Respawn Entertainment | Publisher: Electronic Arts

Release Date: TBD | Revealed: August 2023

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4

In an investor conference call in 2023, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson revealed that Jedi Survivor would be getting a demake, going to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but that was all we learnt then.

Given the issues the game faced since its original release, graphical problems, crashes and a host more, its likely the folks at Respawn Entertainment wanted to get those sorted, before going full steam ahead on the last-gen versions. There is also the catch that we don’t know who is doing that work, as it has never been announced as who is developing this version of the game.

For now, the game is still on its way and if you really want to play the game, it does exist on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, with it also landing in EA Play just the other week.

STAR WARS: ECLIPSE

Developer: Quantic Dream | Publisher: Quantic Dream

Release Date: TBD | Revealed: Dec 2021

Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC

It has been 2.5 years (almost) since the reveal of Star Wars Eclipse, an all-new game that is the first to be set entirely within the era of the High Republic and since that reveal, there has been nothing new about the game released.

We do know what its meant to be, as the developers explained it as “an intricately branching action-adventure game that can be experienced in many ways, and puts the destinies of multiple playable characters in your hands“ but saying is one thing and doing is another. Even the platforms have never been confirmed, so we are really just stuck waiting.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake

Developer: Saber Interactive | Publisher: Saber Interactive

Release Date: TBD | Revealed: September 2021

Platforms: PlayStation 5, PC

In September 2021, we got word that Aspyr, Lucasfilm and PlayStation were working together to bring Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic back to modern gamers, with a full remake of the classic Bioware title. Since then development had stalled at Aspyr and while Saber Interactive were still apart of Embracer, they picked up development in August 2022.

That was 18 months ago, give or take and in that time, we have learnt nothing more about the game. Heck even the official reveal trailer was made private, likely due to the Aspyr logo included, you can see it in the version captured by Gamespot below. Now that Saber Interactive is its own company again, it is possible that they are going to start pushing this one, but there is nothing to support that. As far as we know the game is still a PlayStation 5 timed console exclusive and PC only release, but that could also be something that has changed, we just don’t know.

Untitled STAR WARS Strategy Game

Developer: BitReactor/Respawn Entertainment | Publisher: Electronic Arts

Release Date: TBD | Revealed: Jan 2022

Platforms: PC

This was first announced back in January 2022, when we got confirmed of Star Wars Jedi Survivor and the now cancelled Star Wars FPS game. This game would be the debut game of BitReactor, but has been silent for the past 2 years. We know that the game is a strategy title and after the recent cancellation of the FPS game from Respawn, the team have confirmed that they are still working on it, but that is really all we know.

Now technically the game has not been revealed yet, as there is no footage, screens or even an official name, so they are not behind any sort of schedule, however with the game more than 2 years past its announcement, you might hope they reveal something soon. The odds of that though are slim, as the studio is actively hiring for developers in Graphics, Gameplay, UI, Systems and Level Design, so with that amount of staff being sourced, news is unlikely to happen.

Untitled STAR WARS Game

Developer: Skydance New Media | Publisher: Lucasfilm Games

Release Date: TBD | Revealed: April 2022

Platforms: TBD

In October 2021, Skydance New Media revealed they were working with Marvel on a game, then roughly a year later we got that first tease of that game, with a proper reveal happening in March 2024. Now the reason I explained that, is as I was hoping it would parallel the development of the Star Wars game from them, as the reveal of that they were working on one, happened roughly 7 months after the Marvel deal.

Sadly, we are now 2 years since that announcement and there has been nothing more revealed about the game, not even a hint as to its status. As we have learnt looking through all these games, when Star Wars games get announced, that is in no way indicative of them being ready to been seen. Given there is no way of knowing how large the team is at Skydance, its possible that they need to get Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra out the door first, before we see Star Wars and as that game is not expected for another 12 months, it could be a long, long time before we get whatever game this is going to be.

So there we go, all the games we know to be coming from Star Wars, at least not counting dedicated mobile games, as they can tend to pop up out of nowhere. Any of the games here interest you? Be sure to let us know.
