The final notes of Anthem are playing out this January
Electronic Arts and Bioware have revealed that Anthem, their online only squad-based game will have its servers taken offline in January 2026, which is surprising as I thought they went offline a while ago.
When we reviewed the game way back in March 2019, there was a solid foundation, but there were a lot of issues with the game. In May 2020, it was revealed that BioWare Austin, the folks at the time behind Star Wars: The Old Republic, would be taking control and attempting to fix the game. But sadly, nothing ever happened, if you check the news page for the game, the last update they posted was in February 2020 and then now with the news about the game shutting down. A blog update did get released in February 2021, where they basically admitted, they were done attempting to fix the game and would leave it as it was.
There were bigger plans of course, at one point EA and Hollywood Director Neill Blomkamp got together to make a trailer for a movie, it did not end up as a movie, but it was still cool to watch.
They did release a little FAQ about the shutdown; you can read it below. While I am sure there are only a handful of people still playing the game, it still sucks to see it being killed off. If BioWare wanted to give players a nice send off, they would patch the game to be playable offline, but that requires money, and we all know that Electronic Arts hates spending money on things.

A: Yes, if you previously purchased Anthem, the game can still be downloaded from a digital library and played until January 12, 2026.
Q: Why can I no longer purchase Anthem or in-game currency?
A: Over the course of the next 180+ days Anthem will still be playable online and you can use the last of your in-game premium currency as we prepare to sunset the game’s live servers on January 13, 2026.
Q: Will I still be able to use my in-game currency?
A: Yes, you can still use any in-game premium currency that you currently have until the game is sunset on January 12, 2026.
Q: How long will the game stay on EA Play?
A: Anthem will be removed from the EA Play playlist on August 15, 2025.
Q: Has anyone else at BioWare been affected by these changes?
A: No, the sunsetting of Anthem has not led to any layoffs.
