Test your skill at home with Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition

After some rating leaks from the ESRB surfaced last week, there was a fair chance we would learn about Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition some time soon after, but maybe not this soon. As overnight Nintendo did officially confirm the game, delivering a trailer and details, first up the trailer.

In a pretty cool twist, Nintendo has also revealed a Deluxe Set for the game, which comes with the game itself, some art cards - one for each of the 13 games included within, a 5-pin set and a replica cartridge for display purposes. Elsewhere the set has been confirmed for the My Nintendo Store, but Nintendo Australia have confirmed that picking one up here will need you to go to EB Games.

Paying tribute to the unforgettable in-person Nintendo World Championships held in 1990, 2015 and 2017, Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition challenges players to battle through bite-sized bits of classic blockbusters. Both old-school and new-school players can enjoy the rush of over 150 speedrun challenges taken from 13 classic NES games. Here is the list of games included:

  • Balloon Fight

  • Donkey Kong

  • Excitebike

  • Ice Climber

  • Kid Icarus

  • Kirby's Adventure

  • Metroid

  • Super Mario Bros.

  • Super Mario Bros. 2

  • Super Mario Bros. 3

  • Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels

  • The Legend of Zelda

  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

There are three game modes to enjoy with in, the first is Party Mode. Here up to 8 players can pick a series of challenges and then aim to be the first person to complete it.

For those looking for a challenge where they are the opponent, the Speedrun mode will test your skills against the times you set yourself, with the game showing your best time alongside your current run.

Finally, the last mode is World Championships Mode and here players can submit their best times in five challenges that rotate each week and compete for a spot on the global leaderboard.

As you complete challenges, you will unlock various pins and the coins you earn can be used to purchase new icons for your profile. The game is available to order digitally from the Nintendo eShop, with the retail release happening this July 18.
