Quake celebrates 25 years with a remaster on all platforms and its out now

Bethesda have announced that Quake is back and this time, it is not a hero shooter, but instead is the original Quake game, remastered for modern platforms and with an all new expansion, check out the trailer below.

This is not some fan made version of Quake, no this is a fully remastering of the original Quake, but now with up to 1080p and widescreen resolution support, enhanced models, dynamic and coloured lighting, anti-aliasing, depth of field, the original, atmospheric soundtrack and theme song by Trent Reznor, and more. Resolution is going to vary, depending on platform of choice, here are the maximums for each platform:

  • PC: Maximum supported by video card/display

  • Nintendo Switch: 720p at 60FPS in handheld mode, 1080p at 60fps docked

  • PlayStation 4: 1080p at 60FPS

  • PlayStation 4 Pro: Native 4k at 60FPS

  • Xbox One: 1080p at 60FPS

You are Ranger, a warrior armed with a powerful arsenal of weapons. Fight corrupted knights, deformed ogres and an army of twisted creatures across four dark dimensions of infested military bases, ancient medieval castles, lava-filled dungeons and gothic cathedrals in search of the four magic runes. Only after you have collected the runes will you hold the power to defeat the ancient evil that threatens all of humanity.

This is not just the original game and nothing more, Quake Remastered also comes with original expansions, “The Scourge of Armagon” and “Dissolution of Eternity,” both remastered as well. On top of that the team at MachineGames have brought across “Dimension of the Past” the expansion they made a few years ago, plus now an all-new fourth expansion called “Dimension of the Machine.”

In the deepest depths of the labyrinth lies the core of lava and steel known only as The Machine. Crusade across time and space against the forces of evil to bring together the lost runes, power the dormant machine, and open the portal hiding the greatest threat to all known worlds—destroy it...before it destroys us all.

In addition to all four expansions, similar to how they did with the re-releases of DOOM (1993) and DOOM II, new content will also be periodically releasing, to download in the in-game "Add-ons" menu. The first Add-on is Quake 64, which includes the original alternate soundtrack by acclaimed composer Aubrey Hodges.

If that wasn’t enough Quake for you, the game is also set to offer full multiplayer, that will allow you to fight through the dark fantasy base campaign and expansions in 4-player online or local split-screen co-op, and compete in pure, retro-style combat with support for 8-player (online) or 4-player (local split-screen) matches. Featuring dedicated server support for online matchmaking and peer-to-peer support for custom matches.

Plus you can play the campaign and all expansion packs, cooperatively or go toe-to-toe in multiplayer matches with your friends regardless of platform! Crossplay is supported among PC (controller-enabled), Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and Switch.

As for when the game can be obtained, well right now, as the game is out now for Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 owners being able to enjoy the game via backwards compatibility, until dedicated versions are released there.

If you already own Quake on PC via Steam or the Bethesda Launcher, you will score a free upgrade to the Remastered version and if you are a Xbox Game Pass subscriber, the game is already included for you, so you can download it now and enjoy.
