Project Helix is the codename for the next Xbox, though it may not be a proper console

In a social post this morning, Xbox announced Project Helix, the codename for there next Xbox console. In a separate social post soon after, the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming Asha Sharma said the following

Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console. Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!

Now all we have seen for the new platform is the below video, which just reveals their codename and logo for it, there is nothing beyond that. No design for the box, no input options, nothing and you know that won’t stop folks from complaining or praising the unit already.

Our only concern is that devices that tend to do multiple things at once, vary rarely do either thing amazing. Washing machines that also dry clothes, tend not to dry that well, or how about VHS/DVD players, they were never the best way to have both. Now do I think Microsoft would make a bad device, no, however I do believe they would happily drop custom Xbox software in favour of Windows.

The problem with Windows is that it is bloated and full of AI bullshit. Even on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally devices, Windows there is a system hog, even the most bespoke version of Windows does stupid things all the time. The operating system for a home console is core to how it works, or doesn’t work and while Xbox has not seen any major updates to what is offered in a long time, the Xbox 360 got those grids by the end, something completely new is great, just not Windows.

The Xbox Series X|S was revealed to the public in December 2019 and released just a year later, so if the same timeline holds true, I would expect a public reveal next year, there is no way we are getting one this year. With a public reveal next year and release 12 months later, that means we could see a new Xbox console in 2028, though console may not be the right term by then.
