Fable finally reveals gameplay, the world and the thousand characters you can meet

Fable finally got a decent look at its gameplay and humour, showing off how your heroic journey begins, and what you can do in the world. For fans of the original games, there are a number of returning locations, but even more new ones.

The world is Albion and your character is the first hero in a generation and when your powers awaken, it is in the middle of an attack on your home town. Those you love, including your nan, are turned to stone, so you head off to discover a way to free them. While the game has always shown off a single person, just like Fable games of the past, you can create your character the way you want. This means gender, appearance, scars and outfits.

While the game itself is a reboot, some of the locations from past games will return, including Bowerstone the capital of the world, complete with Fairfax Castle, the old Clock Tower and the iconic and legendary Heroes Guild. Beyond those, players will also discover new locations, including new forests, both normal and magical, open fields and homes of various gangs and cults, including the windswept city of Bloodstone.

This is in the north of Albion, where marshes, craggy mountains and more await players, if there was a dark corner of the world, this is likely going to be considered it.

Now a major part of all the Fable games, well excluding Pub Games and Fortune, is combat which again lets players use melee weapons, spells and more to get their point across. Enemies do not wait for a turn to rush you, so players will need to be on the watch for all those around. In one on one fights, players can focus on their foe and use whatever means they can to take them down.

When surrounded by enemies, spells to help give you some breathing room will be useful. When a foe is stunned, players can rush in and take them down using a finishing move. These moves will vary depending on the weapon equipped, the position of the enemy and I suppose too, a little humour. The developers wanted to make sure that you can use any of your weapons and spells at any time, that means taking your sword to deal with an enemy in front of you and then throwing a fireball at that annoying one over yonder. All of this is designed to be smooth, so you don’t have to pause the game to change weapons, you just need to press the right button and you are dealing out damage.

Of course, one of the core aspects to all Fable games, again not counting Fable Pub Games or Fable Fortune, is that your choices matter. As you explore the world and be a hero, or a prick, people will remember what you have done. If you are a hero, people will cheer you on as you walk past, they might even like you enough to talk with you some more. If you are not a hero and instead are all about you, then people will not like you, heck even if you are a good person, but just successful, there will be people who are jealous of your success.

Success also extends to things outside of the hero game, including buying homes and business, meeting that special someone or someone’s and having a family. There are over 1000 fully voiced characters in the game, meaning that each person you meet is unique and they will all have their own ways of remembering you. Some folks might be a town crier, or a shopkeeper and they might be nice to you as part of their job. If you buy the shop they work at, they might be even nicer to you, or if you kick someone out of the home they were renting from you, they might be royally pissed and not want to talk with you.

It is important to note that you don’t need to be a hero or a villain, you just need to be you and the game will respond on its own to what you do.

The game does not yet have a release date, but it is coming this year. When it does arrive it will do so on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
