Colour me surprised, say hello to the new iMac from Apple

Apple announced overnight the all new iMac, which is not only much thinner than it had been previously, also comes powered by Apple M1 chip, but most importantly, comes in a range of pastel colours, to liven up your desk, or wherever you work, check it out.

Completely reinventing one of the world’s most iconic computers, the new iMac features a thinner and more compact design that is remarkable from every angle. Enabled by the system-on-chip architecture and amazing power efficiency of M1, the logic board and thermals are dramatically consolidated and reduced in size compared to the previous generation’s, allowing the side profile of iMac to practically disappear. The much more compact design reduces the volume of iMac by 50 per cent,1 allowing it to take up less space and fit easily in even more places.

“M1 is a gigantic leap forward for the Mac, and today we’re excited to introduce the all-new iMac, the first Mac designed around the breakthrough M1 chip,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With its striking design in seven stunning colours, its immersive 4.5K Retina display, the best camera, mics, and speakers ever in a Mac, and Touch ID, combined with the amazing performance of M1 and the power of macOS Big Sur, the new iMac takes everything people love about iMac to an entirely new level.”

Of course, for the first time since the 90’s the iMac is coming in a range of colours, each more in the pastel wheelhouse, but also two tone, with the stand and front facing portion of the screen being one colour and the rest of the case being another, similar one.

Apple have announced that the new iMac will feature a 24inch screen, with resolution of 4.5K, delivering around 11.3 million pixels. In addition, it sports a P3 wide colour gamut, that can generate over a billion colours and with a brightness of 500 nits, you should be able to work in almost any lighting condition.

It isn’t just all about the iMac, Apple have confirmed that all new Magic Keyboards, Magic Mice and the Magic Trackpad are coming, all in the same colours, so you can co-ordinate your desk how you want.

Plus for the first time, Touch ID comes to iMac, wirelessly via the new Magic Keyboard, it uses a dedicated security component on the keyboard that communicates directly with Secure Enclave in M1, creating an encrypted channel to protect users’ fingerprint data from end to end.

As far as availability goes, there are a few things to consider, first is that there are a few different base specs, not related to storage. For the basic of the models, the price begins at $1,899 and gets your a 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU, but if you want 8 and 8, you need to get the next model up which starts at $2,199.

The other difference between the two models is that the cheaper one, does not come with standard USB ports, only the USB-C type, which is also used as Thunderbolt. The more expensive of the two also comes with an Ethernet port on it, which is not included in the cheaper one, meaning you either go wireless or buy an adaptor.

Finally, there is a more expensive model, but it just seems to be more storage by default and if that is what you want, you can look at $2,499.

The new iMac is available to order beginning Friday, 30 April, It will begin arriving to customers and be available in select Apple Store locations and through Apple Authorised Resellers beginning in the second half of May.
