Call of Duty is sticking around on PlayStation, at least for the next few years

According to Bloomberg, who has had sources close to Activision, at least the three next Call of Duty games will still be coming to PlayStation consoles.

That was one of the big questions, once the deal of Microsoft buying Activision-Blizzard was announced, would the series already on PlayStation hardware remain there and reports are they will.

The sources have stated that Activision extended their deal with PlayStation, with this years expected Modern Warfare 2, the game from Treyarch next year and then Warzone 2, also expected next year. This will run out the contract, which was set to complete in 2023, the question is what happens beyond there.

For a few years now, since the early days of the PlayStation 4, Call of Duty had gotten early access to content on PlayStation hardware, and now they get some exclusive items. It is also why when you see a trailer for the games lately, they are branded with the PlayStation logos.

PlayStation did release a statement last week, via the Wall Street Journal that simply said:

“We expect that Microsoft will abide by contractual agreements and continue to ensure Activision games are multiplatform.”

Microsoft has of course honoured those existing deals for titles like Deathloop, which launched on PlayStation 5 as a timed-console exclusive and the upcoming Ghostwire Tokyo is going to be much the same. In years past though, we have seen existing series, like Minecraft, remain multiplatform and then even new entries within that world, aka Minecraft Dungeons, also released on all platforms.

Last week, post the buyout reveal, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer (yeah, he got a new title), did confirm they would honour existing agreements, but that does not confirm that new deals could be struck.

Either way, for now it seems that PlayStation fans can still enjoy a few more years of Call of Duty, before they have to consider what comes next.
